Tuthill family branch

Grandad Christopher Mead Tuthill's parents are remembered as William James Tuthill and Anna Mary (maiden name unknown, presumably Mead?).

In fact, I believe that Christopher's mother was named Hannah Mary, and that Mead was his maternal grandmother's name. If you want to find out more about Hannah and her family, go straight to this post.

Christopher married Mary Louisa BOLTON in 1930 (in Darlington, Co. Durham) and they had 3 children.

Here's a picture of him and his wife taken in the 1970's.

Research on this family is rather stuck, so I'd really appreciate any help I can get here! For example, does anyone have any birth, marriage or death certificates for this family?? Can anyone remember how these people lived:- in which towns, at what kind of work?

BMD Details
I looked up BMD details at the Registry Office for this family branch in Co. Durham.

There is also a possible link to the folk listed on this site (click here) - it shows names from gravestones in Suffolk, name of Tuthill. It seems to have been quite a common name in Suffolk.

Now to look to the National Census
1911 Census, Durham
The details of this latest census are now available - I have had a look at the index for Hartlepool and found these households:

  • William James Tuthill (born 1869, a Painter), wife Hannah Mary Tuthill (1874), with Christopher Mead Tuthill (born 1908). No other Tuthills listed in the household. (So that's the couple who married in 1904, and young Christopher is Grandad Tuthill! We know now from the BMD records that the couple had twin girls in 1905, who died as infants. We also guess that William G. Tuthill, 1912-1921, was a younger brother for Christopher. It seems that Hannah Mary's maiden name was Tunstill - so not much of a change there when she married!) It seems that William James died in 1916, aged 46; and I think perhaps Hannah Tuthill died in the York district in 1927?
  • Walter John Tuthill (1874), wife Margaret Tuthill (1878) and Walter George Tuthill (1901, born Hartlepool). (So that's the couple who married in 1900; Walter is our William's younger brother.)
  • Harriet Framingham (born Suffolk, 1842), living with one of her children, but not those listed here. We know from BMD records that her daughter Agnes married in Hartlepool in 1888, and it's possible the lass Rose Tuthill married in 1891 in East Anglia.

I searched the death records after 1911 and found that Harriet Framingham (nee Moore, later Tuthill) died aged 72 in 1914, in Hartlepool.

1901 Census, Durham

Searching for Christopher's mother, Hannah Mary - I haven't yet found a reference to this lass in the 1901 Census. (We suspect they married in 1904, and that she was a Tunstill - to read more about her and her Tunstill ancestors, go to read this post.)

As for Christopher's father; the following details are thought most likely to be those of Christopher's father, William James Tuthill. He was chosen from a list of William Tuthills due to his location & his job – he's thought to have died of Lead poisoning. I need to see the details from BMD certificates to be confident that these people are the right ones!! (Bear that in mind when you read on!)
{N.B. now that we can see the 1911 census, that gives another level of confidence that William James the Painter is the relative we seek.}

William Tuthill, aged 31, born West Hartlepool, Durham; living at 18 Adelaide St., West Hartlepool; House Painter. Living with his widowed mother - Harriet Framingham, and his many siblings, half-siblings. (Harriet Framingham remarried after the death of her first husband Mr. Tuthill, and by 1901 she was widowed again.)

1891 Census, Durham
If we travel back in time to 1891, now - looking for William Tuthill. We could expect he would be aged around 20??
Henry & Harriet Framingham in 1891 census - at 17, George St., Stranton, Hartlepool.
Henry (deaf, nearly blind, aged 42) a retired Coal Trimmer (?),
Harriet (47), wife. Also their children;
Julia Tuthill (22) Dressmaker
William Tuthill, (21) a painter
Walter Tuthill, (18) apprentice Ship Carpenter.
also 3 Framingham bairns.

1881 Census, Durham
If we travel back in time to 1881, now - looking for William Tuthill. We could expect he would be aged around 10??

Household of 14 Dover Street, Stranton, Durham {Stranton is still there, but neither George St nor Dover St are in the modern-day Gazetteer}

Henry FRAMINGHAM (Head), aged 32, born West Newton, Norfolk; a General Labourer
Harriett FRAMINGHAM (Wife) 38, born Lowstoff, Suffolk
Agnes TUTHILL Daur Female 15 West Hartlepool {sic, not Julia, and different age, too}
William TUTHILL Son Male 11 West Hartlepool, Durham {born circa 1870}
Walter TUTHILL Son Male 9 West Hartlepool, Durham
George FRAMINGHAM Son Male 3 West Hartlepool, Durham,
Charles FRAMINGHAM Son Male 8 m West Hartlepool, Durham,
Thomas HALE, Visitor U Male 26 Stockton, Durham; Printers Compositor

Presumably the first 3 children with a different name are Harriett's children (from a previous marriage?). Else they are adopted, perhaps orphan niece & nephews??
A record was found of the marriage in Hartlepool between Henry Framingham & Harriette Tuthill, in 1876 - the timing seems to fit this family.
{I'll return to databases & see if I can find a first marriage to Mr Tuthill - perhaps in Suffolk - certainly not in Hartlepool.}

Other possibilities in the 1881 census include:
Although I prefer the first choice (shown above), there are other William Tuthills in the Durham census of 1881. They are detailed below; you'll see these are a bit too young, and their birthtowns don't match the data in 1901 census.

The son William TUTHILL, here - born ~1879:
of New Cottages, Dawdon, Durham
William TUTHILL Head 32 Winhaston, Suffolk; Sailor
Margaret TUTHILL Wife 26 Sunderland, Durham
William TUTHILL Son 2 Seaham, Durham
Ann M. TUTHILL Daur 2 m Seaham, Durham
James TOOD Boarder 56 Ireland; Gen Lab

The son William TUTHILL, here born ~1877:
of 4 Fry St., Elvet, Durham
William TUTHILL Head 33 born Suffolk; Coal Miner
Jane TUTHILL Wife 28 born Durham
William TUTHILL Son 4 born Durham
George TUTHILL Son 1 born Durham

Right back now to the year 1871:

The census of 1871 shows us Harriet Tuthill (29) with her first husband William Tuthill (32, born Suffolk; a Stevedore) and children Florence (8, born Suffolk; Scholar), Agnes (6), Julia (4), William (2), and baby Rosey (all born Hartlepool).

They lived in Adelaide St, Stranton, West Hartlepool.

The records show that Tuthill was a common name then in Suffolk/Norfolk, and I have already mentioned a site (here) which shows the gravestones of some Tuthills in Suffolk. Another is linked here, this time a national site.
Looking at the recorded places of birth for their children in the 1871 Hartlepool census, it seems the couple lived in Suffolk in 1863, but had moved to Hartlepool by 1865. It seems unlikely that they would have returned to Suffolk after 1865 in order to get married?
But for a long while I found no mention of the marriage between William & Harriet ~I was looking for one around 1862?

Now I have found several! Two in Norfolk (1859 and 1869), and one in Suffolk (1868) which is described here.

In Suffolk, there is a record of the marriage in June 1868 between William Tuthill and Harriet Moon, or Moore, when our William would have been around 20 years old. They were married in the Blything district, an area which includes Halesworth & Southwold. More info here, including an interesting page about the local Workhouse. An adjacent district is named as Mutford. (The birth of a baby girl named Harriet Moore was registered in 1843 in the Mutford area, but there was no record of any Harriet Moon of this age listed on the Free BMD index. Note that in a later census, she described her place of birth as Lowestoft. See a map here.)

There are 2 possibilities for the birth records of William Tuthill {remember that in the 1871 census he records his birth in Suffolk} - one in the Mutford district in June 1838, and one in the Blything district in 1842.

Their first child Florence is listed {in the 1871 census} as born in Suffolk, too - in about the year 1863. The FreeBMD index has Florence Ann Eliza Tuthill, Mutford, born Dec 1862.

A record has been found for the death of Willm Tuthill (34) in Hartlepool in 1872, and we think Harriet married again (to Mr. Framingham in Hartlepool) in 1876.

I have made a contact through Genes Reunited with some relatives of Harriet's second husband. They have confirmed for us that Harriet had been named Harriet Moore, born in 1843 in Pakefield, Lowestoft. She married our William Tuthill in 1868 in Pakefield. They had 3 girls before they married (Florence, Agnes and Julia), and then our William, Rosa and lastly Walter in early 1872.

After William died at the end of 1872, Harriet married Henry Foulger Framingham (Hartlepool, 1876), who was born in 1850, in West Newton, Norfolk. Henry was an 'Ag Lab' in West Newton (even at the age of 11 in the 1861 census). His father was also a farm labourer. He and Harriett had three children (Alfred, Charles and Henrietta). He died in 1898, leaving Harriet as a widow till she died in West Hartlepool in 1914.

I've had a hint that I may be able to find William Tuthill recorded on a Census in Suffolk with his parents, John & Eleanor.
So I looked up the 1851 Census for a suitable entry. Found a 12-year-old William Tuthill (born in Suffolk, 1839), and living in Market Lane, Blundeston (Mutford area), Suffolk. He is described as an Agricultural Labourer Boy. His parents are Blundeston-born John Tuthill (aged 52, Ag Lab - Horse Driver) and his wife Mary Tuthill (aged 47, born in Norfolk). Other siblings in the house are Sarah A. (aged 14) and Ellen E. Tuthill (aged 5).

Harriet (aged 7), meanwhile, was seen in the 1851 Census at the Pakefield (Beccles Road) household of the Farm Labourer William Moore (32, born Henstead, Suffolk) and his wife Mary (31, born Oulton, Suffolk), along with Elizabeth (11), James (6), Rachel (4) and baby Maria.

In the 1871 Census of Great Yarmouth, we see a Tuthill household:
John Tuthill (Master Mariner, aged 73, born Beccles) and wife Emily Tuthill (56, born Yarmouth).

Have your say - but it may take a while before it appears. Sorry - I need to do this, because I took out the security steps to make it all easier and allow anonymity...but now I need to moderate!! Cheers, Lisa
